Major efforts have been invested to develop methods which are both sufficiently accurate and capable of reaching realistic system sizes. I will describe recent progress in developing a quantum Monte Carlo framework for many-body simulations. We have determined aspects of the ground state in several models where previously the fermion sign problem had prohibited simulations, such as spin-density wave and itinerant ferromagnetism in Hubbard-like models, and properties of the typological phase in an interacting Haldane model. Such simulations can provide exciting new synergy with the so-called "optical lattice emulators," which aim to "simulate" the models by experiments with cold atoms. I will also discuss the applications of our method to ab initio electronic structure calculations in real materials.
