Chen Nanxian, Physicist. Born in Shanghai, in 1937. Native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. B.S. in Physics, Beijing University, 1962. Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, University of Pennsylvania in 1984. Now serving as professor at Tsinghua University, and director at the Institute of Applied Physics at Beijing University of Science and Technology, standing member of National Advanced Materials Committee of China, and senior associate of the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy. He proposed the inverse problems on boson system, the fermion system and the lattice system; and developed systematic and sophisticated methods for these problems. Chen obtained a concise and unified solution for the inverse capacity problem which includes both Einstein's model and Debye's model as special cases. Chen also obtained a concise and general solution for the inverse lattice problem, which is important for establishing the interatomic potentials base. This provides an important foundation for performance prediction of complex materials and materials designing. Dr. Chen was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997.
